Early Settlement and Population:

  • When Christopher Columbus first arrived in Jamaica in 1494, St. Thomas was densely populated by the indigenous Taíno/Arawak people.

  • The English captured Jamaica in 1655 and organized the territory into parishes. St. Thomas Parish was established at that time.

  • About 1600 colonists, mainly from Nevis, settled in St. Thomas. However, tropical fevers caused significant mortality among them.

  • Enslaved Africans were forced to work on sugar cane plantations in the area.

Name Changes:

  • Initially known as Saint Thomas in the East, the parish later became simply Saint Thomas.

  • In the 18th century, Maroons (escaped slaves) settled in the mountains of St. Thomas.

  • The parish system of colonial administration was reformed in 1867, leading to the name change.
